The Promise is a limited-run series from Nashville Public Radio about life in James Cayce Homes, a public housing development smack in the middle of a city on the rise.
These are stories of a neighborhood in flux, a community defined by its struggles, and the growing divide threatening its very existence. Each episode presents a close-up view of the Homes through one issue or one person, and in A Beautiful Day in the Projects, we meet Dexter Turner, better known by his nickname Big Man. A husband, father, community leader, and showman, Big Man is beloved by the neighborhood. Producer Meribah Knight, who spent months getting to know the people of James Cayce Homes, hangs out with Big Man as he's making plans to barbecue, then the day takes an deeply unsettling turn.
Additional credits: Editing by Blake Farmer and Anita Bugg, with additional help from Tony Gonzalez, Emily Siner, Chas Sisk and Julieta Martinelli. Sound Design by Tony Gonzalez. With special thanks to Alex Kotlowitz.
