Eventually, Strauss left commercial radio and ended up at Monitor Radio in Boston where she produced in-depth stories about world events. She also freelanced as an education reporter for Monitor, winning a NY finalist award for her story on gifted education in the United States. Before arriving at Duke's Center for Documentary Studies to hone her digital editing skills with mentor John Biewen, Strauss spent years as a teacher and freelance food writer for the Portland Phoenix, Yankee Magazine and the Boston Globe.
