June 23 , 2007 (#71)- The Big Show Show

Backstage with the Rockettes
Dean Olsher- Host/Producer, The Next Big Thing
Emily Botein- Producer, The Next Big Thing

Manhattan has plenty of icons: the empire state building, the statue of liberty, the broadway marquee. But comes December, there’s really only one show in town. The Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular featuring fireworks, a flying santa, an indoor snowfall and of course the world-famous Rockettes. And if you’re even THINKING about going to see it? You gotta get your tickets now. Producer Dean Olsher spent a performance day backstage with wardrobe assistant Celeste Canfield.

The Tristan Mysteries: The five-hour mystery
Amy O'Leary- Producer
Limor Tomer- Executive Producer

Opera, by its very nature, is synonymous with extravaganza: The huge voices, the sweeping music, the epic story-lines, the performance that lasts hours…..the longest in fact is eighteen hours, Wagner’s Ring Cycle. Which by comparison, makes Wagner’s Tristan Und Isolde, a five-hour Opera, go by in a flash. But, if the five-hour length isn’t enough to entice you, its very colorful history might.

Tristan und Isolde Act 1
Ed Herrmann- Independent Producer

Each opera season brings a predicament. Some people feel obliged to attend but really don't want to be there. And for someone who doesn't like opera, there is nothing worse than sitting through Wagner. For those who just can't take it, here's Act 1 of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde in three minutes, plus a summary of the action.

What Brought Down the House
Brendan Greeley- Independent Producer

In our country, one of the biggest shows around is a constitutionally mandated annual spectacle starring one of the biggest actors around, the president of the united states. Each year he, or she, is required to give a state of the union address to congress. Talk, talk, clap, clap, stand-up, sit-down, fight fight fight. In 2004, producer Brendan Greeley decided to do a brief analysis of the address to see what kind of sentiment got what kind of response.

Saturday Night Klein
Sean Cole, Senior Reporter, Weekend America

One of the hottest tickets to one of the longest running shows in New York is absolutely free. All you have to do is wait in line. Louis Klein usually arrives at the line for standby seats to "Saturday Night Live" by Friday afternoon. The tickets are given away at 7 am the next morning. And he's pretty used to the all-night sitting. He's been waiting on the line since the show was popular enough to merit a line. He's seen 539 out of 622 shows. He saw the first show. And over the years he's gotten pretty famous--and even a little infamous--in SNL fan circles. Weekend America's Sean Cole spent the night, on the sidewalk, with Saturday Night Klein.

June 2 , 2007- Radio Across Time Zones : Hour 1

This week we present a Third Coast Festival special broadcast. With Gwen Macsai as tour guide, Radio Across Time Zones helps listeners discover the unique radio stylings of various countries worldwide, featuring stories from around the globe. In Canada, a young woman reflects on her father’s near-death experience, while relishing his stubborn spirit of adventure. In Ireland, a group of healthy-sized women gather around an elaborate feast, microphones on, to dine and share stories about body-image and weight, love and prejudice. In Australia, a producer explores the last-ditch hope – tongue in cheek - that karaoke might actually save her marriage.

Radio Acrosss Times Zones presents these stories and more against a back-drop of sound-rich radio snippets from distant countries, giving listeners a rare sampling of radio as it’s heard around the world.
