2007 Third Coast Festival Broadcast
Broadcast on Public Stations Nationally in Fall-Winter 2007
This fall the Third Coast Festival brings the best new documentaries produced worldwide to the national airwaves in a special two-hour program called the 2007 Third Coast Festival (TCF) Broadcast. The featured documentaries, all winners of the seventh annual TCF / Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition, represent radio at its finest: moving, insightful, surprising and sometimes even life changing. Alongside the winning documentaries, the broadcast includes a profile of the year’s Audio Luminary Award winner, behind-the-scenes producer interviews and highlights from the annual Awards Ceremony.
>> Check out the Audio Library page to hear the full-length pieces that are excerpted in the program, as well as links and winner bios. <<
The 2007 TCF Broadcast is hosted by Gwen Macsai, host of Re:sound, the Third Coast Festival’s weekly documentary program on Chicago Public Radio. An award-winning writer, producer and humorist, Macsai's radio work has aired on All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and Weekend Edition Saturday and This American Life. Macasi joins an impressive list of public radio stars who have hosted the Third Coast Festival Broadcast, including Ira Glass (2001), John Hockenberry (2003) and Barbara Bogaev (2005.)
Roman Mars, producer of TCF's weekly program Re:sound and a key member of the festival's staff, produced the 2007 TCF Broadcast and along with Re:sound production assistant Delaney Hall.
The 2007 TCF Broadcast will be distributed nationally by Public Radio International (PRI) and available through the Public Radio Exchange (PRX). |

Radio Across Time Zones: A Third Coast Festival Special Broadcast
Broadcast on Public Stations Nationall Spring-Fall 2007
Hosted by celebrated producer and essayist Gwen Macsai, Radio Across Time Zones: A Third Coast Festival Special Broadcast will showcase some of the most unforgettable and innovative audio documentaries and features being made worldwide. Hopping time zones, the program presents the work of leading producers from Australia, England, Ireland and Canada and brings their stories straight to your ears.
With Gwen Macsai as tour guide, Radio Across Time Zones will help listeners discover the unique story-telling styles each country has to offer: In Canada, a young woman reflects on her father’s near-death experience, while relishing his stubborn spirit of adventure. In Ireland a group of healthy-sized women gather around an elaborate feast, microphones on, to dine and share stories about body-image and weight, love and prejudice. In Australia, a producer explores the last-ditch hope – tongue in cheek - that karaoke might actually save her marriage.
Radio Acrosss Times Zones will present these stories and more (all in English) against a back-drop of sound-rich radio snippets from other distant countries to give listeners a rare sampling of radio as it’s heard around the world.
Radio Across Time Zones: A Third Coast Festival Special Broadcast will be distributed nationally by Public Radio International (PRI) and available through the Public Radio Exchange (PRX).

Dreaming of Fat Men
Lorelei Harris - Producer
RTE (Radio Ireland), 1994
Here's the set up : four women, all very large, are invited to a radio studio in Ireland that has been transformed into a sumptuous boudoir - lots of pink, some low lighting, candles, china, crystal, and an enormous elaborate feast. None of these women had ever met before, but what ensues is a long conversation about everything : food, fat, longing, love, power, family, and chocolate.

Resonance 104.4 FM
In London, on 104.4 FM, there's a radio station like no other. Tune in and you might hear a show devoted to the cultivation of bonsai trees or an hour of deep cuts from vintage Congolese records. After that, perhaps, "Calling All Pensioners" (a show for seniors), "Schlock! Horror!" (a parade of b-movie trailers), or maybe the complete works of William Blake, read aloud. This laboratory of experimentation is called Resonance FM. It was launched nine years ago by the London Musician's Collective and it's now a community station, operated by four permanent staff members and over 300 volunteer technical and production staff. Resonance FM prides itself on an open access policy which allows anyone a chance to get on the air. It broadcasts 24 hours a day and is dedicated to radio art, free-form absurdity, the undiscovered, the forgotten, and the impossible.
