Story

Voice of America’s The Century in Sound is a radio documentary that chronicles the entire 20th century without narration.

Produced in 1999, the montage gives VOA's millions of non-American listeners a sense of the century's historic sweep.

Producer

Adam Phillips has been a radio-features journalist, audio documentarist, and oral historian since 1986, both as a public radio freelancer and, since 1993, as a career journalist at the Voice of America. Phillips has won nearly 20 international, national, and in-house awards for his work, which highlights the experiences and realities of everyday people with extraordinary stores to tell, and which makes extensive use of found sound and music to create a “theater of the mind.”
