Thursday, October 20, 10 p.m. – Midnight
Lakeshore Ballroom, Wyndham Chicago

Everyone's always kvetching about how hard it is to get adventurous audio on major national series, but the producers of HearingVoices.com have found this isn't always true. For them, sound portraits are a passion and a profession. Here’s a chance to hear some bursts of sonic delight which have been broadcast nationally since 2002, including some of their shorter features, docs, and audio art. Come listen with lights low and volume high to just how moving radio can be. Several HV producers will be on hand to accept accusations and acclamations. But mainly there’ll be less talk and lots of sound, starting off the conference weekend with a couple hours that'll change your life, or at least make your night....

Close Listening

We spend a lot of time around our radios, but how often do we get to really listen to what comes out of them? These sessions are meant to help you think about listening and about how to express your opinions about what you hear in a new way.

Four sessions will be offered, and each will be limited to twelve participants to foster more in-depth and personal conversations. Two sessions will be curated by a moderator and two will be "BYOR," with attendees bringing short pieces to play and receive feedback on.

Moderators (separately): Davia Nelson, Nikki Silva, Martin Spinelli

PRX In the House Hotel

"Give us your CDs, your promo copy, your archived pieces yearning to feed free...." The Public Radio Exchange (PRX) is a nonprofit web-based service for distribution, review, and licensing of radio content. PRX will be set up near the registration tables all weekend, eagerly awaiting the opportunity help you get involved by opening a member account or by adding work to your existing account. Stop by to ask any questions, to find out more about this service, or just to say hello.

Additionally, you won't want to miss "Zeitfunk: The annual PRX party. Live DJs, Open Bar" happening Friday night, October 21 at Chicago Public Radio studios on Navy Pier, from 9:30 pm to 1:00 am. These gatherings have become legendary, in the annals of Third Coast lore...
